This text looks like the cloud between the Israelites and Egyptians; having a dark side towards the latter, and a bright side towards the former. It represents death like Pharaoh's jailor, bringing the chief butler and the chief baker out of prison; the one to be restored to his office, and the other to be led to execution. It shows the difference between the godly and ungodly in their death; who, as they act a very different part in life, so, in death, have a very different exit. He is "driven away;" namely, in his death, as is clear from the opposite clause. He is forcibly thrust out of his place in this world; driven away as chaff before the wind. In a sinful state— He is driven away in his wickedness. He lived in it, and he dies in it.
What is the profit of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts? Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape. The Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name. What is the distinction between a righteous person and a wicked person? Is it easy or difficult to distinguish between the two? Our passage today addresses these questions because the people of Israel are ready to give up their faith in God. They are convinced that it is worthless to serve God.
There are many passages in Scripture whereby a professing Christian must examine the genuineness of their faith according to how they live, whether in godliness, humility, love, good works, holiness, righteousness, etc. The confusion comes when, although each of us must come to an honest assessment as to whether or not we are indeed personally righteous in practice, we are simultaneously preconditioned to presume that any thought or perception of righteousness in ourselves is "self-righteous" and consequently moralistically sanctimonious or Pharisaical. However, according to Scripture there is a great fixed gulf between the righteous and the self-righteous; A righteousness that is acceptable to God Isa. Paul says in 1 Corinthians , "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Is it not the righteous? He leaves us with no other option. This verse is certainly not speaking of an imputed righteousness, for the context in which he speaks is one of right or wrong behavior.
The second thing Noah did when he got off the boat was to plant a vineyard so he could get drunk. You have to give him props for patience and long-term planning. When push came to shove, Abraham lied and gave up his wife in order to save his own skin. And who can forget the story of David and Bathsheba? Psalm 32, written by David, is a chiastic song see here for an explanation of chiasms that helps us understand this seeming contradiction.

Righteous versus the Ungodly
Used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers. There are five kinds of righteousness. There is the righteousness that ordinary people possess to a greater or lesser extent. There is the righteousness of Christ that is ascribed to the person who puts his faith in Jesus and lives according to the Spirit of God. Then there is the beginning Christian righteousness which is a joint venture of the adamic nature and the Spirit of God. Finally there is the fifth form of righteousness. It is the righteous personality and behavior that are created in the Christian as he follows the Lord, counting his personality crucified with Christ and risen with Christ.
