Les Brown founded his "Band of Renown" in and led it until his death in It became an eminently danceable band and very popular with the audiences, just as Brown had wanted. That his was a "commercial" band cannot be denied, but at the same time it could and did swing. Evidence of such can be heard in this set of recordings compiled here from the dates listed above. Brown did not hanker to lead a "jazz" outfit, nor did he crave becoming another Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, or Woody Herman.

Doris had a great voice and was very cute. She first sang the song at some late-night rehearsals at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York.

Les Brown & His Band of Renown - Sentimental Journey (CD)

I first met my patient, a man in his late 80s, in , when he had been living with myelodysplastic syndromes, a form of bone marrow cancer, for five years longer than the average survival for those diagnosed with the condition. He was a former high school math teacher who was unerringly precise about his laboratory values. He also had a spark to him that no cancer could extinguish. Over the years, we had tried a variety of therapies to treat him, some of which worked for a while, some not at all. After our most recent failed attempt to solve the complicated equation of his disease, he had said enough was enough, and asked to be placed on hospice at the nursing facility where he now resided. Fortunately for him, it was one of the few hospice programs that allowed him to continue seeing me to receive the regular blood transfusions that corrected the anemia brought on by his cancer, which eased his fatigue and made him feel more like himself. When I entered the examination room, he was wearing an outfit typical of what he sported to many of our visits: a red and yellow tattersall shirt; chinos with a broken button, held closed with a black belt; red Ohio State socks; and tan moccasins.

Sentimental Journey (song)

Les Brown and His Band of Renown had been performing the song, but were unable to record it because of the 44 musicians' strike. When the strike ended, the band, with Doris Day as vocalist, had a hit record with the song, Day's first 1 hit, in About this same time, the Merry Macs had a recording following Brown and Day which featured a bouncy arrangement where the group modulates or augments the verse eight times in the last half of the song. A vocal feat for any group attempting to record a song in one take without the benefit of tape editing in that era of modern recording. The song later became something of a standard with jazz artists and was recorded by, among others, Buck Clayton with Woody Herman and by Ben Sidran. Frank Sinatra recorded his version of the song in Rosemary Clooney issued an album Sentimental Journey which included the song.
