It is the fifty-ninth episode of the series overall. It premiered on June 19, Weiss and directed by Miguel Sapochnik. Slav er en voys demand terms of surrender in Meereen. Ramsay plays the odds in defense of Winterfell.
The clue was in the title with season 6 episode 9 - 'Battle of the Bastards' - and while the full 60 minutes weren't given over to the Stark v Bolton showdown, it had enough screen time to really knock the encounter out of the park. After some brief political posturing in Meereen , we got fully stuck into the fight for Winterfell, with Ramsay toying with Jon and Sansa right up until the first arrow was fired, and then a little after too. Iwan Rheon has been consistently brilliant as the show's most maniacal character yet, and will be sorely missed. Essentially it was utter carnage, with soldiers fighting on piles of bodies and giants flinging men around like ragdolls. Director Miguel Sapochnik outdid himself, memorable shots including a close-up of volleys of arrows up in the sky, Jon's muddy, bloody one-on-one fights and the pleasing uniformity of the Boltons' kettling.
How are you feeling about "Battle of the Bastards" and Season 6's epic battle scene? Pretty gnarly and grisly and the antithesis to the battle at Meereen which was very satisfying, right? The stakes were high in the war for Winterfell and not just any director was going to do. HBO wanted Miguel Sapochnik. As spectacular as the battle at Meereen was, it pales in comparison to shooting the Battle of the Bastards scene - there's a reason the episode wasn't called "Some Dragons in Meereen. The scene took 25 days, 80 horses and riders, 65 stunt actors, seven principle actors, crew members, four camera crews, extras, and tons of gravel to complete.
Fought just outside of Winterfell , the Stark-led makeshift force of Free Folk and other minor Northern houses is on the verge of defeat when the knights of the Vale led by House Arryn arrive in time to smash through the Bolton infantry on the rear.
